One aspect of the heater that has never worked (since I've owned the car) is the flap for recirculating the air. Eventually, I replaced the old rubber trim with new foam rubber weather stripping.

The valve mechanism of the thermostat broke when I was taking it apart (due to rust). A friend had to braze it back on for me. It's not pretty, but it works well.
