In order to deal with the rust along the bottom of
the door, I suspended the entire door from the
rafters of my garage, so that it hung loosely in a
section of a plastic rain gutter. The end caps used
rubber seals, and I glued them on for added
protection. I also drilled a hole in the bottom of
the gutter and plugged it with a rubber stopper.
The gutter arrangement made it possible to treat the bottom of the door with various liquids. I started with concentrated muriatic acid (30% HCl) for 15 minutes. After the acid treatment, I drained the HCl via the rubber stopper, and rinsed with normal water. I drained the water and rinsed with water and baking soda, to neutralize the acid. Then I repeated the whole process, which effectively killed the rust near the bottom of the door.
